Nevzlin Wins Certificate from Russia
Group MENATEP Ltd principal holder Leonid Nevzlin has won the first civil case in Russia’s court. Under the award of Presnensky District Court that was upheld by the Moscow City Court, the 4th Tax Service will release to Nevzlin a certificate on having/not having any tax debts. Nevzlin needs this document for the trail in Israel’s Hight Court of Justice that decides on legality of his citizenship.
Nevzlin’s lawyer Dmitry Kharitonov went to the 4th Inspection of Federal Tax Service a year ago, seeking the certificate on having/not having any tax debts for his client, but was ignored there. In the next effort, Kharitonov lodged a lawsuit to the court against the tax bodies.
The Presnensky Court upheld the defendants at first – tax officers claimed they weren’t obliged to enter into correspondence with someone on the international wanted list. Nevzlin was added to that list for grand tax evasion and other holders of Group MENATEP Vasily Shakhnovsky, Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Platon Lebedev faced similar charges afterwards. Then, the prosecutors blamed on Nevzlin plotting murders and attempted murders and delivered an extradition request to Israel.
The lawyers hired by Russia’s prosecutors to dispute validity of Israel’s citizenship of Nevzlin say he concealed the fact that he was the figurant of a criminal case in Russia when applying for Israel's citizenship. Israel’s High Court of Justice tries that case now, and Nevzlin needs the certificate exactly for this trial. Earlier, even before the start of the criminal prosecution against Nevzlin, the 4th Tax Service had officially announced that the examination of his returns had shown no tax arrears to the state budget.
