Sharapova to Try Again
Maria Sharapova of Russia will play at the 18th Kremlin Cup tennis tournament that starts in Moscow Today, October 8, 2007. Sharapova’s comeback will make up for the sudden withdrawal of Justine Henin. The men’s section of the Kremlin Cup has traditionally lured the strongest players of Russia and some players of the Top 50, including promising Andy Murray.
For Wimbledon and US Open winner Maria Sharapova, the Kremlin Cup tournament is, perhaps, one of the unluckiest competitions. The star first played in Moscow the year before last but was beaten by Dinara Safina in the second match. Maria made another attempt past year, to no avail though – she had to pull out of the competition because of the injury.
But Sharapova is fine now and ready to play in Moscow. She is the world number four and the second seed at Kremlin Cup, so she will start from the second round. World number two Svetlana Kuznetsova has become the top seed of the competition after Justine Henin withdrew with the shoulder injury.
But even without Henin, the strength of the Kremlin Cup women players is bound to steal the show. Australian Open champ Serena Williams will arrive in Moscow to face, perhaps, Svetlana Kuznetsova in the quarterfinals. Kremlin Cup trophy holder Anna Chakvetadze will also play to defend the title.
The men’s section of the tournament yields to the women’s one both in rank and in strength. But former world number one, charismatic Safin will play after the two-month break and his sometimes stunning performance usually attracts the crowd.
