Duma Cares about Rights of Georgians
The State Duma issued a statement yesterday “On the Antidemocractic Policy of the Georgian Authorities,” in which it condemned provocational actions in relation to Russia and the U.S. State Department's support for such actions. “Increased instability in Georgia is largely a consequence of the Revolution of Roses,' which, unfortunately, many politicians in the West applauded,” the statement reads.
The Russian MPs expressed the opinion that the Interparliamentary Assembly of the Member States of the CIS, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the U.S. Congress should pay close attention to the situation in that country.
Communist MP Tatyana Pletneva objected that the statement was not worded strongly enough. “Just one little line about U.S. support for Georgia,” she lamented. “They support them in everything – in their domestic and their foreign policy. It seesm to be that it should be signified more strongly in the statement. Or are we afraid to apply pressure too?”
The Georgian parliament responded with a statement about the “interference in the internal affairs of government” by the Duma. That statement was supported by both the parliamentary majority and the opposition.
