Labels Sue Russian Internet Stores
Universal Music and Monolit have filed suit against the owners of the Internet store Jetune.ru and mp3spy.ru as part of an organized offensive against Internet piracy in the country. In a suit dated September 5, Universal states that the website Jetune.ru, which was inoperative at the time of publication, illegally made accessible songs by the group Band'Eros. The suit demands that the site remove the songs of Band'Eros and pay 100,000 rubles in compensation. The suit also seeks to have the company's licenses from the Russian Society for Multimedia and Digital Networks, which is mentioned as a third party, annulled. Jetune.ru, is owned by OOO Delia. Like most similar Russian websites, it uses that organization's copyright management services. Preliminary hearings in the case will be held on October 15.
Monolit filed suit against OOO Nova, owner of the website mp3spy.ru several days ago, accusing the company of distributing songs by performers Glyukoza, Nepara and Yulia Savicheva without the permission of the copyright holder. Monolit i seeking 450,000 rubles in damages and the annulment of that company's licenses from the Russian Society for Multimedia and Digital Networks. Preliminary hearings in the case will be held on October 25.

Industry commentators say that the suits are intended to show decisiveness in combating piracy. They note that, after the fourth part of the Civil Code of the Russian Federation comes into force at the beginning of next year, the fight against piracy will be made easier.
