Security Agents Remembered in Poland
A list of just over 400 citizens who cooperated with the state security force in Poland's socialist past has been found. Under a law on lustration passed last March, the document was turned over to the Institute of National Memory, which made it available on the Internet Tuesday evening. Interest was so high in the document that the site was initially almost inaccessible. Personal details noted in it (state of health, sexual orientation, religious convictions and so on) are not being made public.
The material is mainly based on the archives of the security service of the People's Republic of Poland, all of which, including “secret” material, has been transferred to the Institute of National Memory.
Lech and Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the twin brothers and president and prime minister of Poland, respectively, were closely watched in Socialist times. Both brothers served as consultants to the Solidarity labor union and Lech Kaczynski was jailed for his activities in December 1981.
The law on lustration recommended that the material be published by the middle of September, which means that the institute was slightly late presenting it. Material on candidates on the earlier parliamentary elections has been suppressed until after the October 21 elections. Analysts do not consider the publication of the list to have significant effect on the political mood in Poland.
