Lomonosov Ridge to be Chined before Election
// Russia’s Ministry of Natural Resources will present the proofs of its belonging to Russia in December
Russia’s Ministry of Natural Resources said on Thursday the fact that the Lomonosov Ridge in the Arctic Ocean belongs to Russia is practically proven. Yuri Trutnev’s ministry promised to complete its share of the work for justifying Russia’s claims on the oceanic shelf rich in resources by the December election to the State Duma. The ministry’s statement outraged Western mass media.
Russia’s Ministry of Natural Resources said on Thursday the fact that the Lomonosov Ridge in the Arctic Ocean belongs to Russia has been brilliantly proven by geology scientists. “The crust structure of the Lomonosov Ridge corresponds to the world’s analogs of the continental crust; consequently, it is a part of Russia’s continental shelf,” the ministry’s statement says.

The conclusion is based on the data of the research carried out by the All-Russia R&D Center of Geology and Mineral Resources of the World Ocean. It belongs to the St. Petersburg’s Academic Institute, subordinate to the Federal Resource Management Agency of Russia.

Moreover, the ministry announced that “the package of documents justifying the location of the Russian continental shelf’s border will be obtained in December 2007”. To justify Russia’s claims on the Arctic shelf, scientists used deep-sea seismic investigations, ice-crust gravimetry, airborne geophysical survey, seismic-acoustic and tele-photo-profiling, and ocean-bottom sampling.
