Susan Schwab Announces Australian Agenda
U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab has revealed the U.S. position on Russia's accession to the World Trade Organization as she prepares to meet Russian Minister of Economic Development and Trade German Gref in Sydney. She made it clear that United States does not consider Russia's problems solved, mentioning intellectual property in particular. Schwab also intends to discuss the 2012 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. The U.S. has yet to agree to holding the summit in Vladivostok. Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to make the official announcement of Russia's desire to do so in Sydney.
Schwab spoke before departing for Sydney, where this year's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit is being held. Her tone was noticeably enthusiastic when discussing Russia. Gref's presence at the summit has yet to be confirmed. Russia's defense of intellectual property was “mixed,” she said. Russian authorities are making “serious efforts” in that field, but the actions of Russian law enforcement leave much to be desired.
The closure of the website allofmp3 and others like it was one of the main demands of the U.S. Charges were filed against Denis Kvasov, one of the owners of allofmp3, but the Cheremushkinsky Court in Moscow acquitted him on August 15 and the site has reopened. Schwab did not mention that situation specifically, but probably had it in mind.
A source close to the U.S. State Department says that the U.S. supported Russia's bid to hold the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, and is ready to support it as host of the 2012 APEC summit, but would like to see Russia play a more active role in the Middle East peace process.
