Sharapova Overpowers Opponent with Her Dress
The second day of the U.S. Open tennis championship passed quietly. All the favorites retained their status and advanced to the next round. Maria Sharapova, last year's tournament winner, did especially well, looking more like she was at a society reception in a bright red dress. She faced 51st-ranked Italian Roberta Vinci in the first round. Vinci later confessed that she did not hope for anything more than a victory in one game and was delighted when she met her goal.
Sharapova's dress was a real fashion event. She said that she chose red in honor of New York, the Big Apple, and stated that she was in good form, her shoulder does not hurt and her expectations for the tournament are high.
Anna Chakvetadze, Nadezhda Petrova and Maria Kirilenko also won their matches without trouble. Like Sharapova, they managed to eliminate their opponents in less than an hour. Svetlana Kuznetsova, 2004 U.S. Open champion, had to play a little longer, but she too came out victorious in her match against Czech Klara Zakopalova.
Not all Russians had such a good day, however. Yaroslava Shvedova, Elena Vesnina and Alla Kudryavtsev were eliminated, without surprises.
