Automobile Trade Union Threatens by Strike
The Interregional Trade Union of Automobile Industry Workers, which members are workers of five car manufacturers of Russia and the overall strength reaches 4,000, has announced the launch of campaign for hiking wages of industry’s employees. The leaders say they are ready to stage a strike already this fall.
”When the companies generate super profits and management of enterprises has salary of Europe’s level, the revenues of a worker suffice only to physically survive in conditions of sweating exploitation,” said the statement of Interregional Trade Union of Automobile Industry that was promulgated Sunday and signed by leaders of five divisions of the organization - Trade Unions of Vsevolzhsk Ford Motor Co. and Nokian Tyres (the Leningrad Region), Moscow Avtoframos as well as by the Unity Trade Union of AvtoVAZ and JM AvtoVAZ (Toliatti).

Alexey Etmanov, who is one of the founders of Interregional Trade Union and leads the Trade Union of Ford, said they will first economically substantiate the need to hike wages and negotiate with managers in the next effort. “If [the management] opposes, we will start calling people to a big strike already this fall,” Etmanov warned.

According to Etmanov, Ford workers earn from 16,000 rubles to 28,000 rubles and the upper ceiling is the absolute maximum for all plants of the country’s automobile industry. Renault pays 16,000 rubles to 20,000 rubles in Moscow, AvtoVAZ gives 7,000 rubles to 12,000 rubles. “The wage should equal at least seven living wages but the definite figure depends on the region,” Etmanov specified. The negotiations of Ford Trade Union and management are slated for August 27.
