Timoshenko to Catch Up Yanukovich
Today’s rankings of Ukraine’s Regions’ Party and Bloc of Yulia Timoshenko nearly match each other. It was Vladimir Bondarenko, chief of Kiev Institute of Political and Sociological Studies, that came up with the sensational conclusion yesterday.
Judging by the last poll, Bondarenko said, 27.6 percent of respondents will vote for the Regions’ Party of Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich at extraordinary parliamentary elections slated for September 30. But 26.5 percent will back up the Bloc of Yulia Timoshenko that day. The third leader is pro-president’s Our Ukraine-People’s Self-Defense that enjoys popularity of 11.1 percent.

Of interest is that the Bloc of Yulia Timoshenko advanced 1 percent vs. the poll held three weeks ago. If the trend survives, Timoshenko will not only reach but even outpace the Regions’ Party, Bondarenko forecasted.

Another interesting trend is the low score of communists (just 3.2 percent), though they have been generally predicted to easily overcome the 4-percent barrier to Ukrainian parliament. Socialist Party of State Duma’s Speaker Alexander Moroz is favored by no more than 1.3 percent of respondents.
