VAZ Factory on Strike
Initiators of the strike in AvtoVAZ failed to stop the factory’s main assembly line on Wednesday. According to different estimations, between 100 and 500 people out of the factory’s over 100,000 workers took part in the strike. The factory’s management took it as the labor code violation.
The rally of protest in AvtoVAZ factory began at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday. The workers announced they intend to carry on the strike. The number of protesters is estimated at between 100 and 500 people. AvtoVAZ Group’s press service said that 150 people did not come to work. The management took it as the labor code violation.

In mid-July, part of AvtoVAZ workers demanded the raise of monthly pay to 25,000 rubles. According to official data, the average monthly pay now equals to 14,771 rubles. The management did not raise it, however, and the strike began on August 1st.

Meanwhile, the workers received a response the same day. The letter signed by Viktor Baunov, AvtoVAZ Group’s vice president for personnel and contacts with state agencies, says that the management is not going to meet the workers’ demands. Yet, the strike’s organizers believe it is more likely now that the factory’s administration would agree to make concessions to the workers.
