Separating Spiritual Riches from Civic Virtues
Russia’s Public Chamber’s regular report On the State of the RF Civic Society is likely to condemn “impetuous interference of the church in civic affairs.” Spokesmen of the Christian and Judaism communities in Russia rebuff accusations, which, however, appear well-justified to the Moslems and right-advocates.
It was Vyacheslav Glazichev, chief of Public Chamber’s Commission on Regional Development and Local Self-Government that stepped up to defend separating the church from the government when the Public Chamber’s Council met in Moscow to canvass elaboration of the annual Report on the State of the RF Civic Society.
Amid other things, Glazichev suggested adding new sections to the report that would describe impact and place of the civic society in public and political life of the country with emphasis on civic activity on the eve of parliamentary and presidential elections. The report should also spell out some definite recommendations to public authorities and to civic society.
Glazichev also called on to “pay attention to protection of civic nature of the state, as, nowadays, the crawling clericalism is wide-spread here.” Glazhichev’s colleagues in the Public Chamber took his proposal with clear understanding and promised to offer their ideas during a week.
