Kosovo Issue Off the UN Security Council’s Agenda
The draft resolution on Kosovo, worked out by the group of Western countries, was taken off the agenda of the U.N. Security Council on Friday. However, the decision might prove not as good for Moscow as it seems now.
The draft resolution on Kosovo, worked out by the group of Western countries, was taken off the agenda of the U.N. Security Council on Friday. Britain’s Ambassador to the U.N. Emyr Jones Perry said the real reason why the draft was scrubbed is Russia’s disapproval of it, because Russia promised to veto the resolution.

Russian Ambassador to the U.N. Vitaly Churkin expressed satisfaction with the Western partners’ decision: “We wanted Pristina and Belgrade to continue dialogue. So, what happened today meets our expectations”.

However, the decision might prove not as good for Moscow as it seems now. U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Zalmay Khalilzad warned that passing the case to the contact group will help to make a step towards Kosovo’s independence, despite Moscow’s position. “Although Russia is a member of that group, it does not have the right of veto there,” he said.
