U.S. Still Waiting for Al Qaeda Attack
A special session was held at the White House yesterday to discuss a five-page report prepared jointly by all 16 American intelligence agencies on the terrorist threat in the United States. Although officials are calling media reports that the terrorist organization is preparing a summer attack on the U.S., the report is entitled “Al Qaeda Better Positioned to Strike the West” and officials admit that the organization has been gaining strength recently.
Experts say that the terrorist organization's base is now in the areas of Pakistan bordering Afghanistan. The militants set themselves up there last December after Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf signed a peace agreement with tribal leaders there and withdrew military forces in exchange for their promise to fight the terrorist presence themselves. Experts say the tribal leaders have not kept up their end of the bargain. Terrorists are entering the U.S. through Europe, especially Denmark, Germany, Great Britain and The Netherlands, which have a simplified visa procedure for Pakistan and, in turn, have visa agreements with the U.S.

Interest in the intelligence report is especially high after the U.S. television network ABC reported last Tuesday that intelligence has found out about Al Qaeda plans to commit a new terrorist act on American soil. ABC cited an anonymous intelligence source as saying that the terrorists are already in the U.S. or are to arrive soon. This information was uncovered after British police found coded key words in thee-mail correspondence of the terrorists arrested in the recent Glasgow and London attacks with U.S.-based terrorists. In addition, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff stated this week that he had a “gut feeling” that the country faces a heightened terrorist threat this summer.
