Little Bits of Minatom Still Go a Long Way
The American company Nucon RF, founded in 2006 by former deputy minister of atomic energy Valery Lebedev, has announced that it will enter the over-the-counter stock market in the United States in the third quarter of this year. The company owns 13 percent of the Atoll enterprise, which makes parts for nuclear reactors. The Bloomberg and Interfax information agencies have reported that Nucon RF and Atomenergomash, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Russian state TVEL company, formed a joint enterprise from Atoll for the manufacture of equipment for nuclear reactors.
Lebedev called the new agencies' reports “inaccurate.” In reality, Atomenergomash formed a joint enterprise not with Nucon RF, but with Atoll. That company is called the Northern Energy Heavy Machinery Plant. Atomenergomash owns a 75-percent share in it, and the remainder belongs to Atoll. It will make equipment for the VVER-1000 reactor in one workshop of the Izhorsky Plant.
Nucon RF is investing about $4 million in Russia. According to Lebedev, Nucon RF will not operate at Izhorsky Plant, but will make parts for the outdated VVER-440 reactor. Nucon RF would like to expand into processing nuclear waste in Russia as well. Before joining the Russian nuclear energy ministry, Lebedev was the head of Zheleznogorsk integrated mining and chemical works, which processes nuclear waste.
