Apple Opening Office in Moscow
Apple Inc., one of the world's largest producers of computers and electronic products, is opening a Moscow office. Vacancies for PR manager and major clients manager in Moscow are posted at apple.com. Analysts say the new office will begin operations with the advancement of the iPhone, which is a big seller in the United States.
Without a major ad campaign, the iPhone will not sell well in Russia. Previous Apple innovations went largely overlooked in Russia as well. The new office is expected to open between September and early next year. Direct sales will remain in the hands of Apple's Russian distributor IMC.

Apple produces Mac computers, iPod MP3 players and iPhone cellular telephones. Apple's proceeds in the 2006 financial year were $19.3 billion. Its capitalization on the NASDAQ is $114.48 billion. Experts estimate that the company's sales in Russia last year mounted to about $100 million. Apple is poorly represented in Russia with just 1 percent of the laptop computer market. The iPod, which occupies 70 percent of the American market and 40 percent of the European market for MP3 players, accounts for 12-15 percent of the Russian market. Apple's poor sales are seen as marketing problems. “Apple stubbornly refuses to see Russia or to take it seriously,” stated Evroset chief Evgeny Chichvarkin.

The iPhone has sold 700,000 pieces since its introduction in the United States on June 29. Apple plans to sell 10 million of the devices by the end of next year, including in Russia, and to receive up to half of its financial proceeds from it. Apple does not allow its distributors to advertise its products.
