Avtomir Head Drowns
Russia's biggest car salesman, 43-year-old chairman of the board and co-owner of the Avtomir (Autoworld) group of companies and member of the Moscow road police (Russian abbreviation GUVD) supervisory board Evgeny Satyev has drowned in the Volga River. Witnesses say that his death was an accident, although the Nizhny Novgorod prosecutor has questions about how a completely healthy and fit man, with a black belt in karate, could drown along the shore of an island next to an anchored boat.
Satyev and general director of the Rusavtosbyt company Mikhail Grigoryev arrived in Nizhny Novgorod on Friday morning for negotiations with executives from the local Kit-Kar auto dealership and were met at the airport by Kit-Kar general director Vladimir Poponin and the company's deputy general director. The foursome went immediately to a local restaurant and then took a company motorboat to Telyachy Island, a wooden island in the middle of the Volga across from the village of Bor, a traditional gathering spot for well-to-do Nizhny Novgorod boat owners.
Satyev felt unwell and complained of a sore leg from karate practice and so stayed aboard the boat while his companions went ashore to swim and have a barbeque. Satyev was last seen alive around 4:00. His absence was noted shortly after that, but no one became alarmed at that time. The police were called at 11:00 in the evening. Since it was dark, the search for Satyev was put off until the next morning. His body was found in the river with no signs of violence on it.
Evidence indicates that Satyev, who had consumed a significant amount of alcohol died accidentally, although the Nizhny Novgorod prosecutor has not yet ruled on the case, awaiting expert examination. Satyev will be buried in Moscow on July 11.
