Federer Equals Borg’s Wimbledon Record
Switzerland’s Roger Federer has placed himself among the greats to have played at Wimbledon by winning his fifth straight title in London on Sunday. The world number one overcame Rafael Nadal in a dramatic 7-6 4-6 7-6 2-6 6-2 win. Elsewhere, Venus Williams clinched her fourth singles title at SW19 with a straight set victory on Saturday.
Federer made an excellent start, hitting seven winners before Nadal had managed one as he went into a 3-0 lead. The Spaniard fought back, forcing a tiebreak where Federer prevailed 9-7.
The second set turned dramatically in game ten when Nadal had two set points to level the match. In the third set, Federer and Nadal fought till a tiebreak where the Swiss took the upper hand 7-3.
Leading with a two sets to one, the Swiss took a break and when he returned, Nadal showed his best tennis to take the set with a comfortable 6-2.
Nadal forced a decider and was leading 2-2 with a 15-40 but Federer’s serve proved invincible, and Nadal succumbed to his pressure. The Spaniard fought valiantly to the end but Federer had hit supreme form, volleying on his second match point to take his place in Wimbledon’s history.
Meanwhile, Venus Williams has joined an exclusive club of women to have won four Wimbledon titles when she beat 16th seeded Marion Bartoli 6-4 6-1 on Saturday.
