TV Channels Set Olympic Record
// Half of Russians watched the Olympic Games capital’s selection broadcasted at night
TNS Gallup Media published preliminary data on Friday concerning the way Russian TV audience older than 18 watched the International Olympic Committee’s voting results in Guatemala. Apparently, the country did not sleep that night: nearly 50 percent of the TV audience witnessed how Sochi was proclaimed the capital of the winter Olympics of 2014.
Television has once again proved it is the only and most powerful uniting means of mass media in Russia. On the night of July 4-5th, while the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was voting in Guatemala, Russians did not sleep even late at night. They were watching Channel One’s live broadcasting of the voting on the 2014 winter Olympics capital.

TNS Gallup Media’s preliminary data shows that between 1 and 2 a.m. (when it was announced that Sochi made it into the second round), Channel One’s rating soared from 20 to 28.5 percent. It fluctuated between 22-24 percent till 3 a.m., but it was also a very high rating for that time of night.

The voting’s culmination in Guatemala was directly reflected on Russian TV. Since 3 a.m. (when the IOC was to announce the winner), Channel One’s audience reached a record number: in Moscow, it made up 37.3 percent against the usual rating of 2.4 percent; in Russia it was even higher: 40.3 percent against usual 1.1 percent.
