Venus Trounces Maria with Ease
Wimbledon lost its second-ranked women's player in the 1/8-final yesterday when Venus Williams won against Maria Sharapova in two sets, almost without a fight. The match was supposed to be one of the hits of the tournament. If there had been any worries about the players' performances, they were in reference to Williams, who had just barely won in her last two matches against weaker opponents. The opposite turned out to be the case this time, however, with Sharapova putting in a mysteriously weak effort.
Meanwhile Marion Bartoli and top-ranked Justine Henin, after beating Serena Williams in a dramatic match, became the first semifinalists of the tournament.
In the men's competition, the finish of the match between Rafael Nadal and Robin Soderling was the main attraction. Nadal called the match the hardest of his life. That was for two reasons. First, the match extended across three days, which, even by this year's Wimbledon's rainy standards, is extreme. Second, Soderling put up resistance that Nadal had long not seen, even from players ranked far above Soderling. In the 11th game, Nadal was on the brink of defeat, but he remedied the situation with carefully playing when his opponent had a break point.
Nadal faces Mikhail Youzhny in the 1/8-final.
