Economics Ministry Officials Face Corruption Charges
A major scandal has broken out in the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade. The head of personnel at the central office of the ministry Andrey Mylov and his deputy Gennady Yartsev have been charged with accepting 1 million rubles in bribes. That was the sum the officials charged to reinstate Vladimir Afanasyev in his post of head of the Tyumen department of the Federal Property Management Agency (Rosimushchestvo, a division of the Economics Ministry) after his dismissal by Economics Minister German Gref after an audit uncovered numerous irregularities that led to about 2 million rubles in losses to the state.
According to investigators, member of the Rosimushchestvo legal department Evgenia Sakharovskaya told Afanasyev that she was acquainted with Mylov and Yartsev and that they would get him his job back for 1.5 million rubles. Afanasyev used money he allegedly received as a bribe for turning 3.5 ha. of agricultural land over to a commercial firm in October of last year. Sakharovskaya kept 500,000 rubles of that sum as a commission. After the arrest of Afanasyev and Sakaharovskaya, the ministry officials were arrested in front of a Metro station in downtown Moscow on June 30.
The Economics Ministry has confirmed the arrest of Mylov and Yartsev. Ministry spokesmen say in addition that it was the ministry's leadership that informed the FSB and Interior Ministry of the problem and dismissed the suspect officials in December, before the conclusion of the investigation.
