Russia and Moldova Reach Compromise

Russian President Vladimir Putin met with his Moldavian counterpart Vladimir Voronin in Putin’s Novo-Ogarevo residence on Friday. The Russian president was in good mood, which is quite explicable: for the sake of meeting with him, Voronin neglected the GUAM summit, while Moscow considers the GUAM alliance to be anti-Russian. Voronin’s gesture was appreciated. Putin said “the first steps for unblocking the cooperation in some spheres have been made”.
The main step is that Russia’s chief sanitary doctor Gennady Onishchenko announced there is a possibility the export of Moldavian wines to Russia might be resumed soon. Behind closed doors, the presidents discussed the key issue, -- Transdniestria. Observers believe, Russia might offer a new plan for settling the conflict, instead of the ‘Kozak plan’ declined by Voronin in 2003.
