Murderers of 15 Girls and Women Found
The Sverdlovsk prosecutor's office announced yesterday that the investigation of the murders of 15 girls and women in Nizhny Tagil and surrounding area in the course of three years has ended. The investigation found that a group of eight people kidnapped the women for “the organization of intimate services” and killed them if they refused to cooperate. The case will be turned over to the court in the near future.
The women, most of whom were from Sverdlovsk Region, started to disappear in 2002. The first body was found that year. Eight bodies were found in a common grave outside the village of Levikha. All the bodies have been identified. The youngest victims are Vika Yushkova, 13, and Olga Bubnova, 15. The oldest victim was 26. Most of the murder victims were raped before being killed.
The suspects in the murders are eight residents of Nizhny Tagil between the ages of 23 and 45, mostly former factory workers with previous convictions. The leaders of the group were Eduard Chudinov and his three brothers. They operated a prostitution ring under the cover of a soft-drink wholesaler. The group met girls and women, invited them to their houses or to the forest, then forced them into prostitution.
The suspects have undergone psychiatric examination and been found fit for trial. They have been charges with murder and kidnapping (articles 105 and 126 of the Criminal Code) and other crimes. Sverdlovsk prosecutor's office special investigator Alexey Prokhorov said that the suspects have given partial confessions.
