Russia’s Foreign Minister Unable to Spot Missiles of Iran
Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov faced a truly comprehensive task during his visit to Tehran. He was forced to explain Moscow initiative of creating the missile defense system in Gabala, Azerbaijan, in tandem with the United States.
In Tehran, they viewed the offer that RF President Vladimir Putin made to U.S. President George Bush in time of G8 summit in Germany as acknowledgement of the missile threat of Iran. So, Lavrov had to persuade Tehran leadership that Moscow yielded to that cooperation with Washington without perceiving any particular threat in Iranian direction.

It’s impossible to understand why the United States uses the thesis of some threat of Iran to justify their plans to station a missile defense system in Europe, Lavrov said. According to the foreign minister, the joint system with United States will be created for purposes of monitoring exclusively. The U.S. suspicions could be easily cleared by the information available at Gabala radar, Russia’s foreign minister emphasized.

“I’ve said it today to my friend and colleague Mr Mottaki [Iran’s Foreign Minister Manuchehr Mottaki], and I had the chance to say it to President of Islamic Republic Mr Mahmoud Ahmadinejad… I’m convinced that our explanation has been taken with complete understanding,” Lavrov was optimistic.
