Interros Goes for Uranium
Federal agency Rosatom and the Interros holding company have signed a framework agreement on cooperation on exploration for and production of uranium and concomitant minerals in Russia and abroad, specifically in Uzbekistan and Africa. Rosatom chairman Sergey Kirienko and Interros president Vladimir Potanin signed the document.
Kirienko noted after the signing that the parties have “intersecting zones of interest.” Potanin stated that “The specific fruits of cooperation will appear by the end of the year, most likely in late autumn.”

No specific projects or investment figures were mentioned, but Kirienko said that investment may total between hundreds of millions and a billion dollars.

Interros has been in negotiations with Tekhsnabexport since autumn of last year over the establishment of a joint enterprise to produce uranium on one section of the Elkonsky deposit, Russia's largest. Potanin has proposed that Tekhsnabexport provide the license, and Interros will provide the financing.

Tekhsnabexport is already planning to work with the Japanese company Mitsui under a similar agreement on a different section of the deposit. In South Africa, Tekhsnabexport works with Viktor Vekselberg's Renova.
