Top CEOs to Sit on Russia’s Nanotechnologies Council
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Sergey Ivanov is to chair the Nanotechnologies Council which will also feature Russia’s top chief executives Mikhail Prokhorov, Vladimir Evtushenkov, Alexey Mordashev, Alexander Abramov and Sergey Bogdanchikov, the government announced Thursday.
The government is setting up the Nanotechnologies Council to prepare an expert evaluation to suggestions on the development of nanotechnology industry in Russia. First Deputy Prime Minister Sergey Ivanov has been appointed to chair the council where several corporate heavyweighters have found a place.

Evraz Group’s co-owner Alexander Abramov and Severstal’s director general Alexey Mordashev are to sit on the council under the quota from the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs. The other three billionaires, Sistema’s CEO Vladimir Evtushenkov, Polyus Zolota CEO Mikhail Prokhorov and Rosneft President Sergey Bogdanchikov, entered the organization without any affiliation.

Mikhail Prokhorov and Vladimir Evtushenkov are the only people from the CEO’s list to declare interest to nanotechnologies. Mr. Prokhorov hopes to use the technology in his hydrogen projects while Mr. Evtushenkov is going to use it in Sistema’s e-parts business.

Evraz Group’s raw materials production, steel production of Severstal and Rosneft’s oil can hardly be linked to nanotechnologies so far. Evraz Group’s Vladimir Evtushenkov said in an interview with Kommersant that he simply “got an offer and accepted it.” Severstal’s press service gave a comment in a similar vein.

Viktor Sadovnichiy, rector at the Moscow State University, who is also to sit on the council, provided an explanation, saying that nanotechnologies can be used in oil production and refining. What is more, business leaders on the council could ensure the financial backing for the nanotechnologies project, according to Mr. Sadovnichiy.
