Davydenko Loses in Grass Opener
Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko has crashed out of the Gerry Weber Open, losing to Germany’s Florian Mayer 6-4 6-4 in the second round. Mikhail Youzhny pulled out of competition with a back injury.
World number three Nikolay Davydenko, who reached the semifinals at the French Open last week, has never won consecutive matches on grass. The second seed struggled again on grass Thursday, losing to Florian Mayer 6-4, 6-4 in his first match at the Gerry Weber Open.
Mayer, ranked 37th, forced Davydenko out of his game with low and fast shots. The Russian lost the first set, and the German needed just two break points and 70 minutes to seal his first win over the world number three.
“My coach says for these four weeks on grass, just take a holiday,” Davydenko said. “Otherwise I just get disappointed, frustrated.”
Another Russian, sixth seed Mikhail Youzhny, pulled out Thursday with a back injury, giving Tomas Berdych a spot in the semifinals.
Elsewhere, Dmitry Tursunov beat Paul-Henri Mathieu 7-6 (7-3) 3-6 6-3 at Queen’s Club in London. Marat Safin went out after playing twice in one day and losing 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-4) to Ivo Karlovic.
