U.S. Congress Reminds the G8 of Estonia
Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves suggested on Tuesday that Russia be expelled from the G8. He accused Russia of blackmailing Europe with missiles. “Why should a state that threatens Europe with nuclear missiles be a member of an association of democratic industrial states?” Ilves asked at the Democracy and Security conference in Prague. He suggested removing Russia from the PACE as well.
On Tuesday evening, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution expressing support for Estonia “as a member of NATO and the OSCE,” mentioning the Soviet occupation of the country as well as more recent conflicts between it and Russia. The resolution was supported by all 412 members present at the session.
Ardent Russia critic Tom Lantos, the 79-year-old Democratic congressman from California, told the House that he was born in Hungary and is the only member of the U.S. Congress who was liberated by the Red Army and he opposed Estonia's relocation of its bronze soldier monument. He then went on to criticize Russia's reaction to the move, subjecting the Nashi youth movement to particular disapproval.
The Russian-Estonian conflict is dying down. One of the last signs of it are the huge lines of trucks at the Russian-Estonian border, where waiting times range from 41 to 98 hours. A spokesman for the authoritative American computer company Arbor Networks stated yesterday that the recent attack on official Estonian websites did not come from the Kremlin. It was described as an unorganized attack originating in numerous countries, including the United States and Vietnam.
