European Court to Examine YUKOS Shareholder’s Complaint Soon
The European Court of Human Rights will examine an appeal by the imprisoned former YUKOS shareholder Platon Lebedev, the businessman’s lawyer said Tuesday.
Platon Lebedev was convicted in 2005 of tax evasion and fraud along with Mikhail Khodorkovsky, the owner of bankrupt oil giant YUKOS. A Moscow court sentenced the two men to nine years in prison. The city court later cut the terms by one year.
Former key YUKOS shareholder wants the European Court to uphold his claim that the Russian authorities have violated his right to a fair trial as well as norms of the Russian criminal code.
The European Court has sent questions to the Russian government after it has examined the application, Evgeny Baru, Platon Lebedev’s lawyer told Kommersant. “The European court has given priority to the appeal filed in the interests of Lebedev,” he said.
The lawyer said a complaint about the legality of Mr. Lebedev’s arrest and custody conditions is also being addressed.
Russia is supposed to provide answers by September 10 after which hearings will begin.
