Atomic Station Linked to APEC Summit
Rosenergoatom plans expand production of floating atomic energy stations. A second such station may be built at Pevek in Chukotka, which will experience power shortages in connection with the development of two gold mines there, or on Russian Island, where it would provide energy for the 2012 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. The company is also in talks with Gazprom over the construction of a floating stations near gas deposits on the Yamal Peninsula.
Rosenergoatom wants to create a total of seven stations in ten years, with a recoupment period of ten years, and the seventh built from the proceeds from the first six.

One obstacle to the company's plans is the expense of the floating stations. One kilowatt of capacity would cost over $7000, Minister of Economic Development and Trade German Gref estimated. But that was the most expensive version of the station. The cost of a kilowatt of capacity on the first station is to be $4500-5000. That is also more expensive than the $2000-2500 in regular atomic plants.

The floating plants will last 40 years and require refueling only once every 12 years. Rosenergoatom sees that as a great advantage when the difficulties of hauling diesel of coal to far northern location like Chukotka are considered. Electricity now costs 5 rubles per kilowatt hour in Chukotka, while the cost of production of a kilowatt-hour on a floating atomic station is 2 rubles.
