TVEL Crosses the English Channel
// Russia’s company, together with France’s Areva, will supply fuel for a nuclear power station to Great Britain
Russian state corporation TVEL announced on Friday that it had started implementing the contract in cooperation with French company Areva for supplying elements of nuclear fuel to an atomic power station in Great Britain. It is the first time when TVEL supplies fuel for a British nuclear station. State company British Energy is the final consumer of the fuel.
Russia’s TVEL company said on Friday the contract for supplying fuel tablets, within the framework of cooperation with France’s Areva NP, came into force in late May 2007. TVEL has been cooperating with Areva for over ten years already, but it is the first time when the fuel is to be supplied to Great Britain.
The fuel produced from TVEL products will arrive to the final consumer, British Energy, and will be used at the only energy unit in Great Britain with atomic reactor with water under pressure (type PWR) Sizewell B.
However, strategic partnership does not prevent competition. TVEL is in talks with potential Western consumers. First of all, it negotiates with US companies on licensing the new type of fuel, TVS-kvadrat. TVEL hopes the world’s nuclear power market will be growing, and hopes to increase its share from the current 2.9 percent.
