Ukraine’s Parliament Back to Work
The Ukrainian Rada gathered on Tuesday to pass laws for an early parliamentary election and break a two-month-long political deadlock. Ukraine’s President Viktor Yushchenko and Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich earlier agreed to hold the new poll on September 30.
Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko earlier suspended his decree dissolving parliament and gave members two days to approve laws needed for the election to go ahead.
As a sign of a crisis resolution, the Our Ukraine partly dismantled a stage in
central Kyiv where supporters of President Yushchenko had gathered for almost two months demanding the dissolution of parliament.
Opposition leader Yulia Timoshenko, whose party has been boycotting parliament sessions for three months, views the decision as a positive change. “That was a considerable victory,” Ms. Timoshenko told reporters. “It will now be much harder to disrupt the election than to proceed with it.”
The Party of Regions, which holds majority in the chamber, says sessions of the Rada mean that Ukraine will have a fair democratic election.
Deputies approved on Tuesday about 50 bills adopted during the two months it had operated in defiance of the presidential decree. The Rada also changed the make-up of the Central Election Committee as the prime minister and opposition sought.
On Wednesday, lawmakers are to amend election laws, start drawing up a new voters’ list and secure financing for the poll, which will bring to a head the acute crisis in Ukraine.
