US Fast-Food Chains Flood Russian Market
Church’s Chicken announced on Thursday the launch of its Texas Chicken chain in Russia. The company’s franchisee plans to open from 25 to 30 restaurants in Russia within the next three years, which will be enough to compete with its arch rival KFC.
Zack Kollias, Vice-President of International Operations at Church’s Chicken, said the first Texas Chicken restaurant would open early August in Moscow with the second outlet opening in St. Petersburg in September. The U.S. company has picked European Active Corp. as its franchisee for Russia as well as Belarus and Ukraine.

Church’s Chicken has declared plans to open 70 restaurants in Russia within the next seven years and another 30 in Belarus and Ukraine. Starting investments in the project would be around $20 million, according to Mr. Kollias.

Church’s Chicken was set up in 1952. The company operates 1,500 in the United States and 16 countries. Proceeds in 2006 exceeded $1 billion.

The Russian fast-food market, which grows 25 percent annually, was worth $1.5 billion in 2006, according to RestCon. Moscow accounts for $600 million.

Church’s Chicken is meet its arch rival in Russia, KFC’s outlets, Rostik’s-KFC. But Church Chicken is likely to find it hard to catch up with the Russian-U.S. chain which already operates 122 restaurants. In November 2005, Rosinter has become Yum!Brands’ Russian franchisee, renaming all its Rostik’s restaurants Rostik’s-KFC.
