EU, NATO Shield Estonia from Russian Attacks
The European parliament condemns Moscow for interference in the internal affairs of Estonia following the removal of a Soviet war memorial, European lawmakers said in a resolution on Thursday. NATO threw its support behind the small Baltic country on Wednesday, sending experts to counter cyber-attacks on Estonian websites.
The European parliament voted on Thursday to condemn “attempts by Russia to exert economic pressure on Estonia” in the conflict triggered by Estonian authorities’ decision to remove a Soviet war monument from Tallinn’s main square.
European lawmakers expressed its full support and solidarity with Estonia, and noted that it regarded “attacks targeting one of the smallest EU Member States as a test case for the European Union’s solidarity.” The resolution, which was passed by an overwhelming majority, considered “inadmissible the various attempts to interfere in the internal affairs of Estonia by the Russian authorities, and reminded Russian authorities that their “indiscriminate and hostile rhetoric” would impact EU-Russian relations.
EU legislators called on the Russian government to respect the Vienna Convention on the protection of diplomats, expressing its concern over the “inadequate protection of the Estonian Embassy in Moscow.”
The resolution also called on Russia to assist investigations into cyber-attacks against Estonia websites, saying the attacks have come from Russian administration IP addresses.
NATO earlier voiced its support for Estonia, NATO member since 2004, sending a group of experts to the country to protect their websites from Russian cyber-attacks.
