Once Neftekhimprom Chief Arrested on Estate Swindle
The Tver Court of Moscow sanctioned yesterday the arrest of Maxim Vasiliev, 39, once State Duma’s legislator, advisor to Moscow Region’s Governor Boris Gromov and Neftekhimprom president. Notorious entrepreneur Vasiliev is suspected of real estate swindle.
Vailiev’s arrest was initiated by Interior Ministry’s Investigating Committee’s major detective Pavel Zaitsev. The case in hand is the real estate fraud. A person first puts up for sale a building and takes advance money and then refuses to clinch a deal without returning the advance. To be more precise, Vasiliev took roughly 50 million rubles for a big shopping center in Pererva Street of Moscow.
Until recently, Maxim Vasilev has been a prosperous businessman, whom it would be difficult to suspect of the 50-million ruble swindle, just not his level. His Neftekhimprom used to be one of the leaders of Russia’s chemical industry with the 30-percent of the local tire market under control. The businessman, however, wasn’t very interested in production, preferring to generate money from bankruptcy of enterprises rather than from their development.
But despite rather notorious reputation, Vasiliev managed to become the State Duma’s lawmaker in December of 1999. It was the court that prevented him from being elected for the second term in 2004. The court simply ruled to withdraw Vasilev’s candidacy due to election laws violation.
Before finally retreating into the shadow, Vasiliev was once the advisor to Moscow Region’s Governor Boris Gromov. The last official appointment of detained businessman is the office of a trifle consultant at the Regional Development Strategy Foundation.
