Carrefour Opens 1st Store in Russia in 2008
World’s second-largest grocery retailer Carrefour opens its first store in Russia in western Moscow at the start of 2008. The French company is also negotiating renting floors elsewhere in the Russian capital where competition with other global players like Metro and Auchan is sure to be severe.
Carrefour will open its first store in Russia in the first quarter of 2008, the retailer’s spokesperson Aurelie Launay said in an interview with Kommersant. A group of Carrefour managers are already in Moscow preparing for the launch.

Moscow developers report that Carrefour has reached an agreement with the owners of a shopping mall which is to be ready by the end of the year.

Carrefour first declared its intention to make a move into the Russian market last June, announcing plans of opening its chain in 20 Russian cities, including Moscow and St. Petersburg. The French are now in talks with developers to rent shops in Rostov-on-Don and Krasnodar on Russia’s south.

As some analysts note that competition for stores in Moscow is extremely fierce, speculation is rife that Carrefour may be hoping to buy a local retailer such as Mosmart or Ramstore in the future.
