Ivanovic Beats Kuznetsova in German Open Final
Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova lost to Serbian Ana Ivanovic in a 3-6 6-4 7-6 final at the German Open on Sunday, after a win over world number one Justine Henin a few hours earlier.
Svetlana Kuznetsova on Sunday eliminated Justine Henin 6-4 5-7 6-4 in her first win over the Belgian in 15 previous meetings. Rain stopped the match on Saturday when the top-seeded Henin played two opponents for the second straight day.
The Russian had a confident start against the Serbian 19-year-old, leading 3-0 in just 10 minutes and taking the opening set. But Kuznetsova soon seemed to be fatigued. Ivanovic battled back from a set down with some robust hitting and took the decisive.
Kuznetsova said at a news conference that her performance in Germany boosted her confidence ahead of the French Open, which begins in Paris on May 27.
“I was disappointed to lose the final today, of course, but I have been winning against top players, and I am very happy about that,” the Russian said. “I’m on the right way.”
In Rome, Spain’s Rafael Nadal crushed Chile’s Fernando Gonzalez 6-2 6-2 on Sunday to take the Rome Masters title in his 77th consecutive win on clay. On Saturday, the Spanish overcame Russian Nikolay Davydenko in the semis.
