New Party Set Up with Plans to Win Every 4th Seat in Duma Election
The Great Russia party was set up in Moscow on Saturday. A popular right-wing politician Dmitry Rogozin has promised that the Great Russia will score at least 25 percent of the vote at a parliamentary election in December. Federal officials have not as yet registered the new party.
Russian authorities have not registered a single party after a purge in the election system last December. Great Russia leader Andrey Savelyev said at the constituent session that the party charter has been drafted very carefully and meticulously to meet all registration requirements.

The Great Russia has brought together members of Dmitry Rogozin’s Congress of Russian Communities and Alexander Belov’s Movement against Illegal Immigration. The new party also expects some members of the Fair Russia to join.

The party has set up a tiger as its symbol. “This is a St. George’s ribbon with teeth,” Mr. Savelyev said, referring to the Soviet WWII symbol, an orange-and-black ribbon.

Addressing the delegates, Dmitry Rogozin said he is sure that the Great Russia will be registered with officials and run in a Duma election. “The charter is identical to that of the Fair Russia,” Mr. Rogozin said, referring to the major rightist party. “So if anyone has an idea to turn down our application, we will have a good reason to go to court.” The rightist leader has promised that the party will muster no less than 25 percent in the December vote.
