BenQ Closes Its Moscow Office
Taiwanese cell phone producer BenQ is closing its Russian office in May, the company announced Friday. Russian dealers will now have to import BenQ phones directly from Taiwan. However, BenQ may decide to halt all deliveries. In this case, SonyEricsson and Samsung are most likely to occupy the company’s vacant share in the Russian market, experts believe.
BenQ is closing its Moscow office, the director general of BenQ Mobile Russia told a news conference on Friday.
BenQ Mobile Holding was declared bankrupt last fall. In February, , the insolvency administrator working on the BenQ Mobile case announced the company would be split up and sold after attempts to find a buyer had failed. The corporation does not plan to leave the market despite a $53.3 million loss posted for the first quarter of the year.
BenQ’s Moscow office said that Russian dealers would now have to work with the Taiwanese office directly. Meanwhile, major retail chains said that they did not receive any deliveries from BenQ for the last few months. The share of BenQ on the Russian cell phone market dropped from 11.5 percent in mid-2006 to 3.8 percent by the end of the year, according to Mobile Research Group.
Russian experts say that the Taiwanese would lose the Russian market after they have closed the representative office in the country. The vacant space in the market is likely to be occupied by SonyEricsson and Samsung.
