Yushchenko Puts Off Early Elections
Ukraine’s President Viktor Yushchenko issued the second decree ordering new parliamentary elections, this time on June 24. In the next effort, the president reinstated in office former Prosecutor General Svyatoslav Piskun, whom he himself had forced to resign.
The repeated decree by President Yushchenko dissolving the parliament and shelving election dates from May 27 to June 24 has triggered real furor amid opponents of parliament’s dissolution, ranging from communists and socialists to activists of the Regions’ Party. It was “political absurdity,” “an attempt to encroach the power,” commented Supreme Rada Speaker Alexander Moroz.
But that decision of president could be hardly viewed absurd, there was simply no alternative left. By sealing the second dissolving decree for the parliament, Yushchenko questioned expediency of Constitutional Court’s hearings dedicated to his first decree of April 2. To resume the process, the opponents of early termination of parliament’s authority are to appeal anew
In an effort to strengthen his standing in clashes against Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich, the president initiated the ouster of Prosecutor General Alexander Medvedko, replacing him by Svyatoslav Piskun. Of interest is that Yushchenko himself had forced Piskun to vacate the office of Prosecutor General some time ago. According to informal sources, Piskun was reinstated in office in exchange for the promise to do utmost to hold early elections.
