Bush Given the Veto Task
The U.S. Senate and House sanctioned yesterday a bill linking further appropriations for Iraqi war to the start of the troops’ withdrawal. President Bush will have the bill on May 1, but apparently only to veto the joint effort of houses.
The U.S. Congress finally passed the $124-billion spending bill for Iraqi war that requires troop withdrawal from that country. The House’s 218 to 208 vote set October 1 as the day of withdrawals’ beginning so that the combat operations could end there by next March. The Senate followed the House. There, 51 to 46 backed up the spending bill forcing the pull-out to commence as early as July 1.
But a portion of 146,000 troops of the United States could stay in Iraq for the longer term, to train local police, guard the U.S. facilities there and conduct counter-terror operations. President’s denial to yield to the claims of the Congress would strip him of additional $124 billion that is necessary not only for wars in Iraq and Afghanistan but also for national social programs.
So, the withdrawal bill has passed both houses of the U.S. Congress and will be put on Bush’s Desk on May 1. The solid chances are that the U.S. president will use the veto right for it, doing it for the second time during his presidency.
