McCain Urges to Give Up Oil as Energy Source
U.S. Republican presidential contender John McCain spoke about climate change and America's oil dependence in a speech at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington on Monday, two days before he formally announces his presidential bid.
John McCain (R-Ariz.) warned about U.S. reliance on foreign oil and the threat of global warming.

The way the United States uses oil “is a serious threat to our security, our economy and the well-being of our planet,” the senator said in a speech to the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Senator McCain linked America’s oil purchases in the Middle East and international terrorism. “Al-Qaida must revel in the irony that America is effectively helping to fund both sides of the war they caused,” he said. “As we sacrifice blood and treasure, some of our gas dollars flow to the fanatics who build the bombs, hatch the plots and carry out attacks on our soldiers and citizens. The transfer of American wealth to the Middle East helps sustain the conditions on which terrorists prey.”

McCain is now preparing for his second White House bid, buffeted by below-par fundraising totals and criticism of his upbeat assessment of progress in Iraq. More importantly, the senator is far behind another Republican presidential candidate, Rudy Giuliani in pubic opinion polls.
