Duma to Investigate Violent Crackdown on Opposition Rallies
The Russian Duma is going to set up a task force to examine actions of riot police at recent opposition rallies in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Non-partisan deputy Vladimir Ryzhkov pressed for a full-fledged parliamentary inquiry, but the assembly merely set up a panel of experts without real powers.
Vladimir Ryzhkov spoke in favor of a special parliamentary inquiry to find the culprits of the violent suppression of the March of the Discontented rallies organized by the Other Russia coalition.

“The two Russian capitals saw the events which shocked the whole world,” Mr. Ryzhkov said in an address to Duma deputies. “We cannot turn a blind eye to the mass beating of people in Moscow and St. Petersburg.”

The deputy also demanded that current regulations include extra guarantees for all peaceful gatherings and rallies.

In response, the Duma’s security committee head Vladimir Vasilyev suggested creating a task force to investigate the incident. Mr. Vasilyev referred to last year’s ad-hoc commission which was set up to probe into ethnical clashes in Russia’s north-west. The body, however, went no further than drafting a report following its inquiry on the site of the disturbances.
