Virginia Tech Gunman Had Mental Problems
The United States on Wednesday mourned victims of the shooting rampage at Virgiania Tech. Cho Seung-Hui, who massacred 32 people and then took his own life on Monday, had been sent to a mental health facility, police reported.
“On this terrible day of mourning, it’s hard to imagine a time will come when life at Virginia Tech will return to normal, but such a day will come,” U.S. President Bush told Virginia Tech students and teachers at a solemn convocation Tuesday.
Meanwhile, police were giving more details about the gunman responsible for Monday’s shooting at Virginia Tech. Cho Seung-Hui was sent to a mental health unit because of worries he was suicidal, police said on Wednesday. The 23-year-old rarely spoke to his own dormitory roommate. His teachers were so disturbed by some of his writing that they referred him to counseling.
Lucinda Roy, an English professor, tutored the 23-year-old English major individually three times from October to December 2005. During those sessions, she said in an interview, he always wore sunglasses and a baseball cap pulled low. Ms. Roy said she had been so nervous about taking him on as an individual student that she asked her assistant to be on her guard to call security if necessary.
In a writing class, Mr. Cho submitted two profoundly violent and profane plays which have been recently posted on the internet.
Mr. Cho was a native of South Korea who grew up in Centreville, outside Washington, where his family owns a dry-cleaning business. He moved with his family to the United States at age 8, and was a legal permanent resident.
