Moscow Theater Hostage Victims Go to European Court
The European Court of Human Rights has started hearings on a lawsuit by victims of the 2002 Moscow theater hostage crisis. The suit from 58 former hostages of the Dubrovka Theater is to be considered this year, lawyer Igor Trunov reported.
The victims received a letter from the court saying the hearings started on the case, Igor Trunov said Sunday.

The court has invited the Russian government to present possible objections until July 27. Mr. Trunov says the suit is to be considered this year, but he was unable to specify the date.

63 people filed their suits with the European Court of Human Rights four years ago, but 5 of them were kept off. The former hostages think Russia has breached their rights. All the suits have been joined in the one case headlined Chernetsova and others vs. Russia. Zoya Chernetsova is one of the suitors who lost her son in the hostage crisis.

A group of terrorist stormed the Dubrovka Theater in October 2002, taking 912 people hostage. The terrorists killed five people while 125 died in a police operation which released the hostages several days later. The victims have repeatedly lambasted the Russian government for using a poisonous gas in the operation and dragging out the subsequent investigation.
