Amateur Boxing Championship Back in Moscow
The International Amateur Boxing Association (French abbreviation AIBA) has decided to return this year's world championship to Moscow after the resignation of Russian Boxing Federation president Eduard Khusainov. He will be replaced by former Russian sports minister Boris Ivanyuzhenkov. The championship will be held September 15-30. Official confirmation of the decision is expected by the end of the week.
A conflict arose between Khusainov and the AIBA after that organization mistook the Russian federation president for another person named Eduard Khusainov who had been convicted of ties with terrorists and banned him from an AIBA conference. The Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne is hearing a suit filed by Khusainov now.
The AIBA moved the world championship to South Korea at the beginning of last month after Moscow was late filing financial guarantees of $1.5 million for the championship. Those guarantees have still not been provided. Ivanyuzhenkov, now rector of the Podolsk Corporate Social and Sports University, noted that Khusainov did not support AIBA president Ching-Kuo Wu when he was a candidate for that position, and Khusainov has a long-standing conflict with AIBA secretary general Caner Doganeli.
Ivanyuzhenkov's appointment to the presidency of the Russian Boxing Federation will be officially announced in about a week. He is expected to take up his duties at that organization in three weeks.
