Marat Safin Recovers, Wins
The Russian team has made it to the semifinals for the Davis Cup after barely edging past the French. Marat Safin made the deciding point for the Russians yesterday at his fifth meeting with Frenchman Paul Henri Mathieu. Now the team will face the Germans to get into the final round.
Captain of the Russian team Shamil Tarpishchev replaced Safin with Nikolay Davydenko in a pair with Igor Andreev, saying that Safin has injured himself and would be unable to play until at least the end of next week. Davydenko and Andreev then defeated the French Sebastien Grosjean and Michael Llorda. Andreev then defeated Grosjean alone, continuing a string of successes for him.
The Safin made an amazingly quick recovery to do battle with Paul Henri Mathieu. to whom he lost twice before and whom he had beaten once before. Mathieu played with many mistakes. Now Russia faces Germany in Moscow September 21-23. Russia is favored to win.
