American Gives It All Up for Sochi
Roger McCarthy, CEO of the popular Breckenridge Ski Resort in Colorado, has announced that he will leave that position and move to Russia to head the Roza Khutor complex outside of Sochi, which is one of the three final contenders to host the 2014 Winter Olympics. “I have been offered the rare opportunity to be involved in leading the development of an entirely new resort from the ground up,” McCarthy said in an announcement issued on Tuesday by Vail Resorts, which owns Breckenridge.
McCarty will leave the Colorado company on May 4. He has 30 years' experience in the ski resort business and had headed Breckenridge for seven years, dramatically raising its international popularity and it financial indicators. He expanded the area of the resort, added ski slopes and created North America's highest chairlift, the Imperial Express. Breckenridge is now ranked sixth among the best ski resorts of the United States and Canada.
It can be assumed that, if Sochi is chosen as the location of the 2014 Winter Olympics, the skiing and snowboarding events will be held at Roza Khutor.
