Secret Witness in Litvinenko Case Identified
// Boris Berezovsky
The presence of a new witness in the investigation of the murder of political emigrant Alexander Litvinenko has recently become known. The witness claimed that political emigrant Boris Berezovsky was involved in the case and stated that he feared sharing Litvinenko's fate. Interviews with the witness appeared on the Russia Today English-language television channel and on News of the Week on the Rossiya channel. Kommersant has learned that his name is Vladimir Teplyuk.
Teplyuk, who also lives in Great Britain, was to give evidence linking Berezovsky to the killing of Litvinenko, allegedly because Litvinenko know details of the scheme Berezovsky used to receive political asylum in Great Britain. The witness told Russian television journalists that he knew Litvinenko, who tried to get him to pose as an FSB agent sent to Britain to kill Berezovsky. When he refused to do so, a psychotropic were slipped into his coffee and a falsified confession was recorded, which Litvinenko later provided to a London court.
Berezovsky, who was questioned in London on Friday by representatives of the Russian Prosecutor General's Office working on the Russian investigation of Litvinenko's murder, called the new theory about Litvinenko's death an attempt by Russian authorities to “cover the crime.” He added that those who are covering up the crime are becoming criminals themselves, and that he identified Teplyuk easily. Ichkerian representative Akhmed Zakaev was also questioned by Russian prosecutors in London on Friday.
