Russian Soccer Players to Play for Themselves and Their President in Estonia
Russia’s national soccer team will hold one of its most important games today. If it wins in Estonia, it will play on for the right to participate in the finals of the European Championship. If it loses, there will remain very few chances, while changes in the Russian Football Federation will be almost inevitable.
The game will begin at 9:30 p.m. Moscow time in Tallinn today. Estonian national team has not yet scored any goals in this selection round.
Victory is an almost necessary condition for the Russian team to continue the struggle for two first positions in the group, which give the right to take part in the 2008 European Championship. Losing will cost dear both to the team and to the CEOs of the Russian Football Federation.
Guus Hiddink’s fate is clear in both cases: his contact is in force till next summer with the possibility of prolonging it for two more years.
So, Russian team has nothing but to win in Tallinn today.
